Networking

Networking is an essential component for successful career exploration and management.  Networking provides opportunities to “see what you can be”, learn about companies, develop awareness of industries and see a variety of functions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, at least 70% of all jobs are obtained through networking. It is important and valuable to cultivate your network even when you are not looking for a new job.

  3. Networking Tracking – Due to the amount of networking you will do, it is a best practice to create a system to track your activity. This system can be as simple as capturing it within your personal calendar. Alternatively, some students have created their own trackers. The point is to do what will work best for you. Here are some trackers previous students have used:
The elevator pitch, or positioning statement, is commonly used at networking events, socials or corporate receptions.  The pitch is used as a means to quickly and succinctly introduce yourself and highlight your professional brand.  You will want to craft a strong 40 second pitch to introduce yourself that contains keywords related to your past, present and future career goals along with noteworthy skills and professional interests.

The CBCC’s favorite book for networking?  The 20 Minute Networking Meeting is one of the best guides in the market. The CBCC has numerous copies available to checkout from our office.
